Leadership, in the 21st century, is not just about the leadership of others. Instead, it is about something more fundamental and more powerful - self-leadership: the leadership that we exercise over ourselves. There are endless definitions and descriptions of leadership; all containing vastly differing viewpoints; all with merit. However, in focusing on the idea of self-leadership, the most useful fact for PiB is "the awareness and understanding of influence itself."

When you consider awareness and understanding, you see that it recognises not only the importance of human influence in the determination of what we are and what we do, but also the complex nature of the human experience... for in taking an initial step toward understanding and improving our own self-leadership, we must first recognise that leadership is not just an outward process - we can and do lead ourselves. As the sidebar quotation suggests, our greatest potential source of leadership and influence comes not from an external leader, but from within ourselves!

So too, the existing literature on leadership is almost universally focused on influence exercised by one or more persons over others (in short, influence exercised by "leaders" on "followers"). We say, self-leadership also provides considerable promise for taking those we seek to influence to the next level. Indeed, effectively engaged, enabled and empowered; employees offer the best blueprint for achieving the exceptional organisation of the 21st century.

PiB is not about management fads, behaviour modification, 'feel good' or quick fix band-aid coaching strategies. If you are looking for more strategies, 'learnt' techniques or tools - we will not meet your needs. If however, you are looking for the meaning of true leadership, we invite you to contact us.
